Several factors are encouraging more efficient appliances, like natural&nbsp;gas condensing make-up air units, to emerge onto the market. Several factors are encouraging more efficient equipments, like natural&nbsp;gas condensing make-up air units, to emerge onto the market. The factors include the recommendations of ASHRAE Standard&nbsp;62.1 (Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality); the use of Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems in which a separate make-up air unit is normally required; and the increasing awareness of building owners, managers and users about the importance of air quality.<\/span><br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<span class=\"titre-sous\">Eliminating barriers<\/span><br>\n<span class=\"texte-courant\">While indirect-fired make-up air units have an efficiency of approximately 80%, condensing units have upwards of 90% efficiency. Despite their higher performance, however, these equipments are taking time to break into the market. Likely deterrents include a high initial purchase price and the risk of the condensate freezing in cold weather.<\/span><br>\n<span class=\"texte-courant\">Through &Eacute;nergir&rsquo;s Innovation Program, Bousquet, one of Quebec&rsquo;s largest HVAC equipment manufacturers, compared the on-site energy performance of a number of generations of make-up air units equipped with different heat exchangers, including a condensing heat exchanger. The results spoke for themselves: not only did the condensing unit prove to be more efficient, but any fears about using these equipments were dispelled.<\/span><br>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4443\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 640px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/8503_image1_v32-n3-n1.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4443\" src=\"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/8503_image1_v32-n3-n1-1024x204.png\" alt=\"Image 1: First, second and third generation (condensing) make-up air units (shown from left to right)\" width=\"640\" height=\"127\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Image 1: First, second and third generation (condensing) make-up air units (shown from left to right)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<span class=\"titre-sous\">Integrating technologies<\/span><br>\n<span class=\"texte-courant\">The tested condensing make-up air unit has a new heat exchanger with dimpled tubes and a larger surface that reduces static pressure by 30% compared with conventional heat exchangers. The greater surface results in improved hot air flow, while the dimpled tubes allow for a higher rate of heat transfer. The new condensing heat exchanger also works in a variable air volume (VAV) system. Finally, its parallel flow system prevents condensate from freezing (see image 2), even at very low temperatures. Furthermore, because the unit is controlled by a programmable logic controller (PLC), it is easy and quick to start up.<\/span><br>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4444\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 640px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/8503_image2_v32-n3-n1.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4444\" src=\"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/8503_image2_v32-n3-n1-1024x571.png\" alt=\"Image 2: Freeze protection system\" width=\"640\" height=\"356\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Image 2: Freeze protection system<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<span class=\"titre-sous\">Full-scale testing<\/span><br>\n<span class=\"texte-courant\">To demonstrate the benefits of its natural&nbsp;gas condensing heat exchanger, Bousquet wanted to compare its performance with that of older generation equipments. With this in mind, the company approached &Eacute;nergir to carry out testing through the Innovation Program, which offers grants for innovative energy solutions (see sidebar). Following consultation, a trial was conducted under real conditions. The Natural&nbsp;Gas Technologies Centre (NGTC) was tasked with metering three generations of make-up air units, to compare their performances. The main objectives of the metering were as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li><span class=\"texte-courant\">Compare the gas consumption of each generation of appliances;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"texte-courant\">Check the temperatures of the hot air supply and the outside air;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"texte-courant\">Measure unit efficiency using combustion gas analyzer; and <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"texte-courant\">Ensure that there was no freezing of condensation in drains, venting systems, etc. at low temperatures during cold spells.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<br>\n<span class=\"titre-sous\">Promising results<\/span><br>\n<span class=\"texte-courant\">Le Lalande, a grouping of 392&nbsp;apartments spread over four buildings with four stories each, was an ideal site on which to conduct the comparative assessment, as the buildings were already equipped with first and second generation make-up air units manufactured by Bousquet (see image&nbsp;3).<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"clear: both;\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_4445\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 640px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/8503_image3_v32-n3-n1.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4445\" src=\"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/8503_image3_v32-n3-n1-1024x640.png\" alt=\"Image 3: Le Lalande\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Image 3: Le Lalande<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p style=\"clear: both;\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_4457\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 640px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/8503_image4_v32-n3-n1_EN.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4457\" src=\"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/8503_image4_v32-n3-n1_EN-1024x474.png\" alt=\"Image 4: Location of make-up air units on the Le Lalande building\" width=\"640\" height=\"296\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Image 4: Location of make-up air units on the Le Lalande building<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"clear: both;\">\n<span class=\"texte-courant\">To ensure accurate test results, the condensing unit installed on the site for the testing had airflow similar to that of the existing units (5,000&nbsp;cfm). Over a 12-month period (from January 2017 to January 2018), <strong>the testing revealed the following advantages to using natural&nbsp;gas condensing make-up air units instead of conventional units:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li><span class=\"texte-courant\"><strong>96% thermal efficiency<\/strong> compared to 87% and 84% efficiency for first and second generation units, respectively (see graph 1);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"texte-courant\"><strong>Return-on-investment period of three to four years<\/strong> compared to 17 years for first generation units;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"texte-courant\"><strong>No malfunctioning, even in very cold weather;<\/strong> and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"texte-courant\"><strong>Precise temperature control<\/strong> promoting energy efficiency and increased comfort (see graph 2).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<br>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4460\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 600px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/8503_graph1_v32-n3-n1_EN.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4460 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/8503_graph1_v32-n3-n1_EN.png\" alt=\"Graph 1: Comparison of actual efficiency during operation and instantaneous thermal efficiency of three roof units\" width=\"600\" height=\"355\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Graph 1: Comparison of actual efficiency during operation and instantaneous thermal efficiency of three roof units<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4461\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 600px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/8503_graph2_v32-n3-n1_EN.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4461 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/8503_graph2_v32-n3-n1_EN.png\" alt=\"Graph 2: Condensing make-up air unit temperature stability\" width=\"600\" height=\"440\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Graph 2: Condensing make-up air unit temperature stability<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n&nbsp;<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<span class=\"titre-sous\">&nbsp;A winning combination of performance and versatility<\/span><br>\n<span class=\"texte-courant\">With their high performance and growing availability from a number of manufacturers, these high-efficiency appliances have a promising future ahead of them. They can be adapted to the needs of many different clients and their buildings: rental units, office towers, industrial buildings, institutions, mines and more.<\/span><br>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"tableau-texte\" style=\"height: 10px;\" valign=\"middle\">\n<td colspan=\"5\"><span class=\"titre-sous\">&Eacute;nergir&rsquo;s Innovation Program at a glance<\/span><br>\n<span class=\"texte-courant\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energir.com\/en\/major-industries\/energy-efficiency-programs\/programs\/innovation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&Eacute;nergir&rsquo;s Innovation Program<\/a> aims to promote more efficient use of natural&nbsp;gas. It targets companies that wish to:<\/span>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li><span class=\"texte-courant\">Test the use of new or emerging technologies in Quebec that cut down on the consumption of natural gas by air and water heating appliances;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"texte-courant\">Pilot one or more innovative commercial approaches related to a measure involving new technology; or<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"texte-courant\"> Try out measures or incentives to eliminate or reduce the barriers that prevent &Eacute;nergir&rsquo;s customers from adopting energy efficiency measures for air and water heating using natural gas.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"texte-courant\">The grant can cover up to 75% of the costs incurred by a project, up to a maximum of $25,000 for an experimental project and up to $250,000 for a demonstration project. Through the program, Bousquet received $58,000 in financial assistance for its project, which covered 54% of costs.<\/span><br>\n<span class=\"texte-courant\">As natural gas condensing make-up air units allow customers to cut down on their natural&nbsp;gas consumption (and their energy bills as a result), we encourage those who install this technology to take part in &Eacute;nergir&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energir.com\/en\/business\/grants\/energy-efficiency-programs\/energy-efficiency-measures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Implementation of energy efficiency measures grant for business customers<\/a>.
